just arrived back from a 7 day trip to the Fiji Islands, wow what an experience. I had visited Fiji back in the 90’s and I can say that the country has really advanced since then. A week of Sun, a little rain and a lot of swimming.
I can defiantly say that the islands offer a real treasure island escape. I now understand why all the Fijians refer to Fijian time. How amazing is it to take a step back and just slow the mind, you are immersed in total relaxation.
How to get to Matamanoa Island
We stayed at the lovely Matamanoa Island Resort. Arriving into Nadi, the best way to get here is with a speedboat from Denarau. Seaplanes and helicopter transfers can be quite expensive.
Where to stay: Matamonoa Island Resort
The island is solely owned by the resort and operates as a Adults only resort., so definitely a visit for Honeymooners and couples. Being 2 single female friends we found that the island was more suited for loved-up couples. 😋 Our room was a beachfront Bure, with our own little plunge pool surrounded by luscious greens and with a few more steps we could walk straight onto the beach.
There is a vast array of leisure activities and cultural day trips that can be booked and organised by the resort. Snorkeling, kayaking or just lazing at the beach or the infinity pool enjoying those lovely cocktails are a few to name. We loved the early rise to capture the amazing sunrise.
We did have a day that was raining so my friend and I did hike the whole island in an hour and even ventured up to the mountain to take in the scenic views, this was just pure bliss.
One of the downsides that I found was that the resort has only 1 restaurant so when you stay here your options for breakfast, lunch and dinner are quite restricted with a very basic menu. On our last 2 days, we decided to leave the island and head back to Denarau, which consisted of a more lively atmosphere.
Prices are not cheap, I found that most things were relatively same prices as in Australia and accommodation can be expensive too. Some hotels in Denarau quoted up to $700 Fijian for a night. So if you looking for a more relaxed, take a step back holiday then Fiji is the destination for you.
