Why Is This Report Useful?
Ever wondered what the actual value of your Marriott Rewards points in 2018 are? AwardTravel.com has teamed up with Pointimize to publish Award Travel Reports to show you the analysis behind Marriott Rewards points valuation (CPP) by using real and historical data. Time to maximize your Marriott Rewards points for your next award night!
Last time, we discussed Hilton Honors’ CPP value from previous data analysis in this series. This week, we are going to focus on Marriott Rewards points.
First of all, let’s take a look at the total Marriott points distribution.
As you can see, Marriott’s median is 0.72 CPP. What’s more, the peak density of Marriott CPP distribution is also close to 0.72. That is, when you book a hotel at 0.72 CPP, it’s the most common point redemption rate you can find, and this is the number winning 50% of all Marriott’s offerings.
In this chart, the quartile indicates that about 50% of Marriott’s award rooms lies in a range between 0.57 and 0.93. So, if you find a Marriott deal with CPP higher than 0.93, it’s a must-go. On the other hand, if you encounter a deal that’s lower than 0.57 CPP, it’s way out of the “Okayyy…“ verge. On that point, we suggest that you should just leave it and look for a better deal.
Let’s stop the brief intro of Marriott here. Now it’s time to get a more in-depth understanding of how to utilize Marriott points to the maximum.
Before kicking off this section, there’s something vital for you to pick up before proceed: The chained-brand hotels showing above are Marriott’s brands before merging with SPG. Just like other hotel chains, the most luxurious name of Marriott – Ritz Carlton doesn’t have the highest CPP median. Instead, the brand with the most satisfying performance is Protea Hotels, a South Africa-based hotel brand. On the other hand, the worst performed hotel brand is somewhat surprising – it’s Moxy Hotels, a distinctive select hotel brand. Its SPG counterpart is Aloft, for your record.
Let’s review the numbers from a different perspective – Marriott hotel categories. Following the “Lower the category, higher the CPP” standard rule, the category with highest CPP is category 1, having a 1.12 CPP. However, higher the category, the CPP does not always get worse. In this case, the lowest CPP belongs to category 7, with a 0.62CPP.
Today, we have shared our historical data to give you a better picture for strategizing your use of Marriott Rewards points. Hope you liked it, and we expect you were able to learn from this discussion and utilize this knowledge to a better award travel journey.
